ADULT SERVICES:

SETTING:
University Hospital/Kellogg Eye Center/Taubman Health Care Center.
DESCRIPTION:
University Hospital is the adult general care facility for inpatient medical-surgical patients as well as the diagnostic, treatment, and support base for clinical units of the medical center. Kellogg Eye Center is the patient-care, teaching, and research facility for the Department of Ophthalmology. Taubman Health Care Center consists of primary, specialty, and subspecialty outpatient clinics.
STUDENT'S ROLE:
To serve as a non-medical liaison in a variety of settings including general care patient units, Recovery Room, Intensive Care, Patient’s Library, Admitting, Hydrotherapy, Burn Unit, etc. Volunteers greet, escort, visit and help provide needed support to patients, families, and staff. Students are called upon to apply psychological concepts in understanding experiences in the setting.
TRANSPORTATION:
Walk or commuter bus.
PREREQUISITES AND REQUIREMENTS:
Three semester commitment to Medical Center requested; additional credit is available for second term of volunteer work. Sign up for an interview with Adult Services (936-4327) as soon as you have registered for the term and been accepted into the class (preferable); or sign up for an interview at the first class meeting (openings in some areas may be limited). Mandatory attendance at Hospital General Orientation (1 hour) and Adult Services Training (1 hour). Proof of measles/rubella immunization and a negative TB skin test required; immunizations provided by hospital as needed.
