DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION
ADULT INPATIENT UNIT '6A'

Students at this Outreach placement site will assist a multidisciplinary team, composed of physicians, nurses, psychologists, speech and language pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists and recreational therapists, in caring for patients with head injuries, spinal cord injuries, strokes, and other injuries or chronic illnesses. Patients on 6A tend to stay for one week to three months depending on diagnosis. The staff addresses medical and psychological needs in a comprehensive manner and makes referrals for continued outpatient treatment.

Volunteers are needed to spend time with patients in order to provide companionship or supervision. Opportunities exist to get to know patients over a period of time, to learn about medical and psychological issues involved in rehabilitation, and to work with dedicated professionals as part of a team effort. Volunteers may be able to participate or assist patients in recreational or other therapies.

Special training will be coordinated by Jeffrey Evans, Ph.D., clinical psychologist on this unit. This unit requires interested and dedicated Outreach students; students may be requested to alter their weekly schedule somewhat as the unit demands. All Outreach students volunteering at this placement will be part of the same discussion group; the group leader for this discussion group will help coordinate scheduling. If interested, please contact: Adult Volunteer Services: 936-4327.
