MATERNAL AND CHILD SERVICES
MOTT CHILDREN'S AND WOMEN'S HOSPITALS
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN MEDICAL CENTER

SETTING:
Mott Children’s and Women's Hospitals
DESCRIPTION:
Children (infants through adolescents).
STUDENT'S ROLE:
Students work in one of a variety of settings such as the school or activities room, nursery, bedside, physical and occupational therapy, and recovery room. They will be involved in various structured activities, play, tutoring, or providing company and an empathic ear to patients and to the family members. They will be called upon to apply psychological concepts in understanding experiences in the setting. This will include observing patient, family, and staff interactions and the various ways people cope with stress.
TRANSPORTATION:
Walk, commuter bus.
PREREQUISITES AND REQUIREMENTS:
Four hour commitment required. May be one 4-hour block or two 4-hour blocks in two different services Three semester commitment requested; additional credit is available for second term of volunteer work. Sign up for an interview with Maternal/Child services at the first class. Mandatory attendance at Hospital General Orientation (1 hour) and Maternal/Child Services Training (1 1/2 hours). Proof of measles/rubella immunization and a negative TB skin test required; immunizations provided by hospital as needed. Further explanation of health screening requirements provided at Information/Orientation sessions.
