ADULT SERVICES: EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

DESCRIPTION:
The purpose is to give non-medical volunteer help to staff
in Emergency Services, and to help family and friends accompanying patients to the ER.
STUDENT'S ROLE:
To serve as a non-medical liaison between staff, families, and
patients in the Emergency Services area. In this role, students provide emotional support for persons in the Waiting Room and Triage areas. Students also aid Emergency Staff upon request. Duties entail patient transport, as well as transportation of lab work and other support services for patients and staff. Students are called upon to apply psychological concepts in understanding experiences in the setting.
TRANSPORTATION:
Walk, or the commuter bus.
PREREQUISITES AND REQUIREMENTS:
Four hour block of time per week/two semester commitment
to Emergency Room with a 3rd. semester commitment to the Medical Center requested, additional credit available for second term of volunteer work. Previous hospital experience as a volunteer or as an employee is desirable but not required. Sign up for an interview with Adult Services (936-4327) as soon as you have registered for the term and been accepted into the class (preferable). Mandatory attendance at Hospital General orientation (1 hour) and Emergency Services Training (2 hours). Proof of measles/rubella immunization and a negative TB skin test required; immunizations provided by hospital as needed.
