When was it
That melancholy neon
Replaced the sparkle of electric light?
When did it happen?
Did electric sparkle die

When melancholy neon came along?
Did marquee bulbs

Grow tired of chasing
When soft
Neon glow
Calmed the night?
Or were the switches flipped to off

When fun turned sad
When flashing light
No longer beckoned
Come to the Cabaret
Was it nineteen twenty-nine?
Or nineteen forty-one

When pensive moods
Made quiet nights.
I cannot quite remember

Nor do I know
When clear radiant lamps
Were turned off one by one.
Electric brilliance sometime ago

Gave way to flickering gasses
Just as incalescent Love
Waned cool to become
A melancholy baby.
