About My Dad

I think the following excerpt from his obituary, as published in the Observer and Eccentric newspaper, provides a nice summary of his professional accomplishments.

"Domenic Corgiat, a principal at Abbot Middle School in West Bloomfield Township [Michigan], died Wednesday [March 7, 1984] following complications from cancer and a stroke.

The 61-year-old Birmingham resident, who had been a principal in the West Bloomfield School District for 16 years, was in the hospital about a week to undergo tests when he suffered and stroke and died.

His death came as a shock to those who worked with him. "Many of the ideas and programs which are now in place (in West Bloomfield's middle schools) were designed and perfected by Mr. Corgiat and his staff." "West Bloomfield schools and parents can thank Mr. Domenic Corgiat for many innovative ideas that have helped enrich the curriculum for students at the middle school level over the past 14 years." [Then-Principal at Orchard Lake Middle School.]

Mr. Corgiat was described as "an outstanding administrator whose primary concerns was the welfare of students." [Then-District Superintendent.]

Friends said Mr. Corgiat was known within the district's administrative circle for his ability to put things in perspective, for his propensity to enliven school project presentations with music and art, and as a man who had compassion for his fellow human beings.

Mr. Corgiat had been principal of Abbot school since 1978. Previously, he served as  principal of Orchard Lake Middle School and West Bloomfield Junior High School. Before joining the West Bloomfield district, he spent 21 years as a teacher and principal in the Detroit Public School System.

Mr. Corgiat held both bachelor's and master's degrees from Wayne State University. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans."

"No life ends if it leaves a memory.
Memories give us strength for another day."
