     In 8vo.  215, [25] pages.
     Contains 116 Dutch strophic songs, often in bar form, each with a tune
in mensural notation.  Each tune is introduced by a sentence such as
"Het xxxv Liedeken op de vvise van l'homme arme een dans, oft Tot my soo
vvilt v keeren." (page 95).  That tune, however, is not the one made
famous by Mass composers. Most tunes are identified as Dutch sacred and
secular songs, and a few are identified as dances.  Also contains a
preface, "Ian Fruytiers wenscht den Leser salicheyt."  The book
concludes with an index of songs alphabetized by text as well as a
topical index.  Scheurleer Ecclesiasticus is a facsimile edition with an
informative preface that identifies tunes, showing that many of them
derived from the Souterliedekens, Marot, or Utenhove.
     The prefatory matter seems to be ecumenical, and Catholic usage is
suggested by the book's listing in Bib. Catholica Neerlandica.  However,
an inscription in the Boston PL copy, apparently post-Renaissance,
indicates that the book was suspected of Protestant sentiments, "Liber
prohibitiis per Ducem Albanium, vid. Append. Belgica ad cata. Lib.
prohibitor.  Anni 1570. pag. 95". Such suspicion is hardly surprising in
light of tunes by Marot, Utenhove, and also "Ein feste Burg."  Printer's
device on titlepage (Angel with book in her left hand and scythe in her
right) contains the motto: Scrutamini.
     The Boston PL copy (160 x 45) collates A-P in 8s, signed $5 (-A1).  It
is protected by a modern binding of parchment on wood.
     One of the Brussels BR copies measures 127 in height.
