(Basel: Wenssler, Michael; May 14, 1478?). Basel usage.
     In Fol. [663] folios.
The date of the privilege, 14 May 1478, is a terminus post
quem. As with a number of early breviaries, what constituted a
"complete" copy is unclear. According to GW, there are 11
sections in the following order. 1: Kalendarium, [a] in 6, of
which there are two later variants of [7] ff., which give the
printing information. 2: Psalter, [a-e in 10s, f in 8] (= 58
ff.) (with one variant). 3: Ordinarium officii, [a] in 6 (with
one variant). 4: Registrum adventus, [a] in 10. 5: Proprium de
Tempore, [273] ff., which was later broken up into 5a1,
Proprium de Tempore, Pars Hiemalis, a-c in 10s, d-g in 8s, h in
12, [i-n in 10s], o in 6, p in 8, q-r in 10s, s in 10, [chi]1
(= 169 ff.) and 5a2, Proprium de Tempore, Pars Aestivalis, [a
in 8, b-c in 10s, d in 8, e-k in 10s, l in 8], (= 104 ff.). 6:
Proprium de Sanctis, Pars Hiemalis, [a in 12, b-c in 10s, d in
8, e in 10, f in 8, g in 10, h in 8, i in 4] (= 80 ff.) 7:
Proprium de Sanctis, Pars Aestivalis [a-c in 10s, d in 8, e-f
in 10s, g in 8, h-m in 10s, n in 8, o-s in 10s] (= 174 ff.) :
8: Commune Sanctorum [a-b in 10s, c in 8]. 9: Officium BMV in
Sabbato, [14] ff. 10: Officium Dedicationis Ecclesiae, [a] in
6. 11: Officia Annexa, [a] in 8. This gives a total of 663 ff.
Calendar.
The New York PML copy (302 x 218) collates: [pi] in 6, a
in 6, a in 10, [b] in 10, c in 10, d-g in 8s, h in 12, [i]-[n]
in 10s, o in 6, p in 8, q-r in 10s, s in 10(+1), [a]-[e] in
10s, [f] in 8, [a] in 12, [b]-[c] in 10s, [d] in 8, e in 10,
[f] in 8, [g] in 10, [h] in 8, [i] in 4, [a]-[b] in 10s, [c] in
8, [a] in 8. Initials supplied in red and blue. Rubricated.
Bound in contemporary stamped pigskin over wooden boards, two
clasps wanting.
San Marino HL 85664 is in two volumes. Vol. 1 consists of
sections 4, 5a1, and 6, totalling [259] ff., and Vol. 2
consists of sections 5a2 and 7, for [278] ff. It has a mounted
ms. leaf of prayers laid in: (top) "Sequu[n]tur bene[diction]es
in manu[s .] ante l[ucem? .] Ex p[ri]mo in sum[mis]
festiuitatib[us]" (bottom) "Pars yemalis de tempore et de
sa[n]ctis." Tears and holes in the paper have created the
lacunae. Bound in (original?) stamped calf over wooden boards
(310 x 225), rebacked. Brass corners, clasps. The stamped
decoration on the top board is different from that on the
bottom board, which in turn is different from that on the
spine. This is also true for San Marino HL 85660, which
consists of sections 5a2, 7, and 11, for a total of [286] ff. A
small area of f. ff8 has been damaged, with loss of text. Bound
in original (?) blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards (320 x
240), clasps. All sections in both copies agree in collation
with GW, and both copies have hand-colored initials in red and
blue.
The Bourbon copy contains the following sections in order:
1, 3, 5a1, 2, 6, 8, 11, for a total of [355] ff. (Note that GW
errs in its description.) Thus, it could have been used as a
winter breviary. Bohatta Schwarzau reports that gathering b of
5a1 is unsigned. Initials hand-colored in red and blue. Ex
libris: "Lud. Hart. Lib. Bar. de Wessenberg, 1711" and "Pfarrer
J. Feuermann, 1853". Bound in pigskin over wooden boards,
traces of clasps.
According to Goff, the Chapel Hill UNC copy consists of
sections 1b, 1, 3, 2, 8, 9, and 11.
