Martij. (Venice: Emerich, Johann/Venice: Giunta,
Lucantonio; Feb. 1, 1499-1 March 1500). Roman usage.
     In Fol. [3], CCCLXXXI (+2 omissions = 386) folios.
Contains a preface on sightsinging by the editor,
Francesco de Brugis. The introduction was apparently printed on
a separate sheet and interpolated between ff. 1 and 2. Printed
in two vols., Temporale and then Sanctorale. Publisher's
device. Massera & Camerini report the measurements 540 x 365.
No calendar.
     Lawrence UK Summerfield J1 measures 537 x 378. Numerous
manuscript emendations pasted over the original text and music;
these are expertly made and therefore difficult to identify on
microfilm. Manuscript index at the end.
     The Washington LC copy (530 x 360) collates: a-s in 8s, t
in 10, v-z in 8s, & in 8, [con] in 8, [rum] in 8, 2[rum] in 8
[$4 a-s, v-z, &, [con], [rum], 2[rum] signed, $5 t signed]. One
ms. leaf glued to back cover. Only t.-p. and ff. 1-218. Bound
in boards and half leather, with brass bosses, one clasp
wanting. NUC pre-1956 reports a ms. correction (by Giunta?) on
f. x1v., and that there are errata slips pasted on ff. 4v.,
6r., 21v., and 175r.
The New York ColU copy shows variants from the description
given above, and Camerini's description does not agree with
either version. The Temporale ends f. 218v with the colophon
of 4 Kal. Oct. 1499. The collation of Vol. I, the Temporale,
matches that of Washington LC, except that New York ColU
includes the introductory treatise on sight singing, so that
the first quire collates a in 8 (a1 + 1.2). A slip with
manuscript additions, including music, is pasted onto the
margin of f. 179r. Vol. II, the Sanctorale, begins with f. 219
(In vigilia sa[n]cti Andree ap[osto]li Introitus) and collates:
A-C in 8s, D-E in 10s, F-T in 8s, V in 10 (lacking V10). The
first colophon appears on f. 323v and is dated "M.cccc.xcix.
xix kl. Febr." The final colophon (dated "M.ccccc. Kl. Martij")
occurs on f. 381v. Occasional early marginalia. The New York
ColU copy consists of two volumes from different sets. The
Temporale (545 x 380) is bound in pink- stained blind-ruled
leather over wooden boards, with centerpiece and four
cornerpiece bosses on each board, four supplemental bosses on
lower board, four clasps with leather straps missing. The
Sanctorale (555 x 380) is bound in blind-tooled brown leather
over wooden boards, with four cornerpiece bosses on each board
(one missing from rear), two catches lacking, vellum index tabs
cut from a printed book, binding waste from several manuscripts
on vellum (12th-15th cent.). From the Typographic Library and
Museum of the American Type Founders Company.
