The Songs

I Like To Watch You Caulk

A few years back Steve Macdonald and I did a sendup of Mike Longcors song I Like to Watch You Walk. Much to my pleasant surprise, it seems to be taking on a life of its own. Still, it's funnier if you've heard the original on Dangerous Heros, available from Firebird Arts and Music.

We humbly admit that both the original and the sendup a great songs, but the sendup is written to be sung by a woman. Since no woman has picked it up, I sing it anyway (see photo.) Please, come and save me from myself. Written in 1998, posted here in April 2001.

The Second Child Blues

A song about the difference between the first child and the second. Any similarity between this song and my son Rob is purely intentional. Written in 1988, posted here March 20, 1996.

This song also shows the power of the web in real life. Sometime in January of 2001 the phone rang. It was a writer from Parenting Magazine. She was doing a piece on how having the second child changes your parenting style and wanted to include some of the lyrics as part of the article. `Sure!' I said. It hasn't hit the stands yet; when it does I'll update this link.

The Tenor Hate Song

I don't hate tenors. I just hate singing in that range. Written about 1990, posted here April 2001.

By the way, the title of this song is not The Tenor Hate Song. The title is the punch line, which is at the end of the first verse.

The Prose and Errata

Yes, writing about singing.

The Art of the Parody

I love (and write) parodies. As in anything else, there are good parodies and there are bad parodies. Here's what separates the two.

Written in bits and pieces over the last few years, posted here April 2001.

Filking and the Dorsai Irregulars

I'm a long-time filksinger and member of the Dorsai Irregulars. The DI are long-time filk singers and general all-around Good Folks. My own involvement with the DI? I guess I'm now part of the `old guard', having been a member since the late '70s. These days I run the business meeting and am referred to as Papa Smurf.

Filk Music

Filk music is an odd subgroup of folk music. Like all genres, any attempt to define it winds up including things that probably shouldn't be there, and excluding things that should be.

It encompasses songs that have one or more elements of humor, science, science fiction and parody. There is a strong element of collective singing (not group performance, but people getting together to sing), often with sing-alongs or even formal circles. It's a lot of fun, and it's probably the bulk of my singing time.

This page is part of Filker's Bardic Ring, a collection of self-chosen sites that in one way or another deal with filk music. Browse them, and see what you come up with!
