brief academic bio

I've somehow been fortunate enough to work with some of the great minds in cognitive science. Allen Newell was my PhD advisor at Carnegie Mellon. George Miller and Phil Johnson-Laird were my post-doc advisors at Princeton. Mentors at Michigan and Ohio State include David Meyer and B. Chandrasekaran. John Anderson at Carnegie Mellon has also been a major influence. I would not have embarked on a research career if not for Fernando Gomez, Charlie Hughes, and Mike Moshell at the University of Central Florida, who helped put UCF computer science on the map.

If you scan the list (at left) of collaborators who currently put up with me, you'll see that this shockingly good fortune continues.

Below is where I've been in academia-land:

  • Professor of Psychology and Linguistics, University of Michigan, 2007-present.
  • Associate Professor of Psychology and Linguistics, University of Michigan, 2000-2007.
  • Assistant Professor, Department of Computer and Information Science, Ohio State University, September 1995-August 2000.
