15 Jan. Ingalls reading. Presentation on Kalidasa. Bring Essay 1.

20 Jan. rasa: Read the selections from Vidyaakara's Treasury and select one which you like and which you are ready to read and discuss in class. Then select an English poem that you consider to be a good example of the use of rasa and bring that to class. More on rasa (suggested by Lydia Yeung).

22 Jan. Sangam poetry and the notion of dhvani. Bring Essay 2: Modern poetry and rasa.

27 Jan. Read selected Sangam poems and bring an example of an English (or other non-South-Asian) poem that you regard as illustrating the technique of dhvani. Coursetools link for Sangam poetry.

29 Jan. The Alvars and Tamil Bhakti poetry. Nammalvar. Basavanna and Kannada Bhakti poetry.
