EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE

Where can you find more information about Evidence Based Practice? There are books and many journal articles about evidence based practice. There are also web sites that contain information about evidence based practice that social workers need to know about. These Websites will help you begin your search.

When you consider developing or improving a program, making an intervention or providing a specific service for a patient or family you should consider what's the evidence for this program, practice or intervention. At the same time, you should be considering what skills or competence are needed. This section of the web site wil present and attempt to link some of these concepts.

The University of Maryland has a blog about Evidence Based Practice.

A growing number of articles are being published that summarize research findings that suggest best practices to use. I am building a list of some of these articles that might be of interest to social workers in medical settings. If you know of an article that should be included, please e-mail me the reference (mlbowden@umich.edu).

The Texas Institute of Behavioral Research, a National Research Center for Addiction Treatment Studies, has a valuable collection of evidence based material to use in the treatment of substance abuse. They have some 500 downloadable items including manuals, forms, assessments, etc.
