neutrino DINGHY |
SPECIFICATION AND DESIGN |
|
The primary functional objectives were: The objective for the project was to
design, build and test out a dinghy that can be easily stored on deck, on the
transom, in davits or car-topped - and handled by one person. At the same
time I wanted a dinghy that is safe (rescue-pod) and seaworthy... and small. Max length 6’3” Max beam 48” Min load capacity 500lb Max load (upper limit with 10”
freeboard) 800lb Max weight 35 lb High impact resilience |
|
For practical reasons, the tender was thought of as being aboard
a Catalina 27. A small cruising boat. It was imperative that the tender could be handled by one person,
and not necessarily a big fella. Several concepts were developed, and in hinzeit,
the tender would have benefited from more buoyancy in the bow section. This
would arguably also increased directional stability when rowed. ..next time.. |

The design process starts with confining the creative space, in
such a way that the continuation demand a chase for solutions to both
anticipated and surprising problems. It’s a spiraling activity of developing solutions. NURBS modeling is an incredible tool, and Rhino 3D is impressive
in its functionality, …including hydrostatics…well + a calculator. |
