Ahhh yes, so you have come to learn more about New York's lo-fi sensation, nipper!. Two years ago, in the town of Great Neck (home of Geffen Records' Sammy) out of sheer boredome, three folks, Chris, Andy, and our good friend Wei-min, met in Andy's basement to play some good wholesome music. At the time, Wei-min was playing base, but soon left his two friends to pursue further musical interests (devoting time to his band, Local Girl My Ass). Afterall, Chris barely knew how to play guitar, and the music they wrote was rather wimpy.

Soon after, another friend Dan joined the band, but this did not last for long (almost a week). Dan wanted to play guitar, but was left with the duties of the holly bass, which did not suit his evergrowing musical tastes. Hoping to form an female fronted Mazzy Star sounding band, Dan left, and after no luck, continued to play bass for Local Girl... with Wei-min. Their hit "On The Hill," brought them much fame, and helped pay the bills

Before Dan left the band, he complained many a time to me about how he hated playing bass and had different musical tastes than Chris and Andy. Their noise and sloppiness were too much for him. This sounded great to me, so I decided to get together with them and put to use a bass I bought during my "Kim Deal/pixies/bassists make the world go 'round" phase. Our first time playing together in our current incarnation was in Andy's basement for a few drunk houseguests.

The first song we ever played was "Water Buffalo," which is still our fans' favorite. In past years we have gone from playing in basements, to playing in everyone's favorite Great Neck community center, Levels, to playing a Bat Mitzvah, to playing our high school's junior prom. At that lovely event, we were quickly kicked off stage (if you want to call it that - it was held in a gym). Our assistant prinicpal was disconcerted by the amount of students leaving to smoke up during our set. Maybe it was the hip-hop withdrawal that led them to such actions.

Giving into the stereotype of pathetic indie rockers we lugged around for the last two years of high school, playing for free and recording on a 4-track. Last year we released a tape of eighteen songs, on Green Thumb Records (a pseudo-label we made up), that we distributed to random stores on Long Island, enticing them with the one dollar profits from each tape, of which we made no money. Our new best friend, Gerry (founder of ITU Records ), got ahold of one of these tapes, loved it, and signed us to his brand new record label.

So last year, we released our first full length, self-titled little ditty of four-track bedroom rock songs. (Check out our Album Page to find out more about it). Strangely enough, the album was recieved rather well in magazines from CMJ to Magnet to POV to Link, and of course lots of great fanzines. Madness. But since we were all away at different colleges last year, we did not get to play out much.

For one reason or another (we're fucking lazy), our "summer tour," fell through, so we did not even play out much during the summer. But right before we went back to school, we finally got into a studio to record a few tracks. That is when we met Nicholas from the Rare Book Room, in NY, who has recorded The Van Pelt and Versus. And now we have a three song 7", called "Like Sounds, Like Tensions," coming out in October. And then we are going to work on a super 4-way split 7" with some great NY bands: Wampeter, The Drenons, and Sculpee.

But at this very moment, we are all back in school again seeking ultimate enlightenment and awaiting the next vacation. And this time, we'll make sure that we play out as much as possible. Really.

:-) Donna (bass)
