ACBL National Board of Directors, 2005-2013.

District 12

The National Board of Directors sets policy for the entire organization at the North American level.  Individual districts have their own government for more local self-governance.  Some function in a "central" manner in which the District controls funding of tournaments and such; others function in a "distributed" manner in which units within the district control funding of tournaments and such.

District 12 is organized as a "distributed" network with a "central" website.
Many thanks to Alan Bau for his  D12 webwork!  Please see that site for local or regional bridge matters.  This site is devoted to displaying national-level activities of this Board member, 2005-2013.

OVERVIEW OF BILL'S PROJECTS

Different National Board members bring different sorts of expertise to the Boardroom.  Some are lawyers; the nature of their expertise in support of setting policy for an organization is probably obvious--important, but perhaps obvious.  The expertise I bring centers on my professional career as a mathematician with a Ph.D. in pure mathematics.  I have specialties in algebraic graph theory (so understand network analysis), in number theory (so am an expert with number patterns), and logic (so am good at building logical structures--involving schedules, masterpoints, and so forth).  I have tried over the course of the past nine years to employ that expertise to benefit the international organization--the ACBL.  In addition, in my role as an academic, I have become involved in computer science and have also been able to share that expertise, in my role as a policy maker for the entire ACBL, as well.  Listed below is a summary of projects completed and those still underway that I hope to complete within the next three years.  Much of the work is represented in Excel spreadsheets; other is linked or noted in other ways.  The material is also partially cross-referenced in relation to the list of committees, below, for broader context within the international policy setting.
2013:
  • Participation in "The Longest Day"--Sandy and I ran an exhibit at the Michigan Bridge Association tournament in which we collected funds and also information involving location of folks with Alzheimer's (not necessarily still alive).  The locational information was then mapped in Google Earth as a way to say "We Remember YOU!"  It serves as a "Memory Map" from the vantage point of the Michigan Bridge Association.  Attached screenshot of the file; attached Google Earth file, in .kmz format (open directly in Google Earth).
  • Revising M-factor to more accurately award masterpoints in stratified events:  Mfactor proposal.xlsx
  • Revising the manner in which master points are awarded in the X strata:  Mfactor proposal.xlsx
  • Comparing the depth of awards in pair and team events:  pairVteam.xlsx
  • Assigning masterpoint awards to new restricted national events.
