alley 403
The feeling comes with sudden brightness an exhilaration, a quickening of mind, turning away yet wanting to look- a sudden absence of night. Like emerging from a childhood matinee into stark afternoon sun - the jarring recovery of disbelief. Or picked up in loving hands from backseat sleep deepened by the car's gentle growl, suddenly blinking into home light never quite awake, yet somehow, for the moment, too soon for bed. Deep in the alleyways of the city amid tall back walls and windowless doors, where an unnatural twilight engulfs the day, a portal opens now and then to a sunlit shore, so near - half a block? - and a world away. There is comfort hidden in darkness impossible dreams the exquisite envy of light that holds possibility within its shelter. Roger Thomas Wehling |
