The
following map shows the overall bus accessibility of all the respondents
in Bangkok. The average time to access the bus system from residence is
10.5 minutes. This seems to spread evenly across Bangkok, and can partially
be explained by development patterns in the city. Urban development in
Bangkok often follows major roads. Land values along major roads are very
high and therefore suitable for commercial developments. Residential developments
are more likely to locate on minor roads that branched out from major roads.
These minor roads are called "Soi" in Thai. Bus routes are usually planned
to serve major roads only. Consequently, people in Bangkok sometimes need
to rely on feeder vehicles such as motorcycle taxi, tuk-tuk (motor tricycle)
or jitneys to take them from inside their "Soi" to the major roads, if
it is too far to walk.
The
following map shows a comparison of bus accessibility between current bus
and motorcycle users. On average, bus users take 9 minutes to reach the
nearest bus stop from their residence, and 54% walk to the nearest bus
stop. Motorcycle users travel 13.23 minutes to access the bus system and
only 47% walk. The map shows that current motorcycle users clearly has
less accessibility to the bus system than current bus users.
