Jada Renee Koushik

Prior to coming to the School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE), Jada majored in environmental policy and natural resource management at Tulane's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She interned with Operation Crossroads Africa for her masters' thesis and was stationed in Uganda, where she led reproductive health forums for high school students and helped to build a medical clinic. While there Jada visited the Mgahinga National Gorilla Park, which sparked her interest in animal welfare, conservation biology, and sustainable development. Gaining an international perspective of conservation and natural resource policy opened her eyes to the need for increased collaboration at the local and international levels in order to adequately protect endangered species.

Jada is pursuing a dual concentration in conservation biology and environmental justice at SNRE. Her interests are in conservation outreach and sustainable development with a focus on protecting endangered primates through education and ecotourism. As a graduate student instructor, she taught an undergraduate anthropology course that explored various cultural groups and the mechanisms by which they adapt due to environmental constraints and subsistence practices. Jada has worked at the Michigan Department of Community Health as an epidemiologist for the past 5 years and this experience has enabled her to explore various facets of public health policy at both a local and international level. In the future, Jada hopes to return to Uganda and work with community members in developing sustainable practices that promote both human and animal well-being. Her goal is to find a position in conservation outreach that combines her range of experiences and skills with her ability to be a compassionate and enthusiastic educator. Currently, Jada is working full-time at the University of Calgary as a research coordinator, which involves managing a research team, preparing grants and reports, and analyzing data surrounding maternal and child health.
