School Re-Entry Programs

A child’s relationship with their peers and friends is an important aspect of adjustment and recovery from a injury or illness. Health care workers are becoming increasingly aware of how important these relationships are and trying to develop strategies to help. The more knowledgeable family and friends are about these strategies, the more that can assist in the process.

There are different components to consider in dealing with schools and peers.

1. Informing school personnel about the injury or illness

2. Maintaining a connection while in hospital or during recovery

3. Returning to school following or during recovery

4. Handling transitions - entry into school or pre-school or moving into a new school system

5. Teasing and verbal harassment

If you have a child who is visibly different and returning to school, you may want to learn more about the program for school teachers sponsored by Changing Faces. They have excellent resources online for teachers.

If you are a teacher, you might consider reading Educating Children with Facial Disfigurement: Creating Inclusive School Communities by Jane Frances. Its an excellent book. Jane Frances is a consultant to the school services at Changing Faces, UK.
