Software

This page explains how to get the software required for lab assignments. Our assignments use free software whenever possible.

Choose the column that describes your situation:

If you are in a computer lab:

The Angell Hall computer labs and classrooms should have all of the software we will use for our course already installed at least two weeks before the assignments are due.

However, you can still use any computer lab to work with our software. If the computer doesn't already have the software,

  1. Download and install the Portable Apps Platform: http://portableapps.com/download.
  2. When you are asked the type of installation, choose local user (or USB Drive if you have a USB drive with 400 MB of free space -- this may be more convenient).
  3. Select the software you need to install from the list in the assignment (or at right) and click Install.
  4. To run the software, start PortableApps then click the name of the application.
  5. In the future, to add software to this computer click: PortableApps, Apps, Get More Apps.

On your own computer:

Use the free software installers as indicated here:

A Good Text Editor:

GIMP:

Inkscape:

  • Mac: You must install BOTH:

    First, the XQuartz installer

    Second, the Inkscape installer

Finally, run Inkscape. A prompt will ask about the location of X11. Find XQuartz in your Applications/Utilities directory. Find all of these directions with the download links here: Installing Inkscape on MacOS.

  • Windows: First, determine if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit version, then choose either the 64-bit installer or the 32-bit installer (rarer) from this page.

Processing Development Environment (PDE):

Any other required software will be added as the semester progresses.
