Christian (Instructor)
Christian first started programming on the IBM System/34 in the programming language RPGII. He is a Professor in Communication and Media and the School of Information. He previously spent time as a visiting researcher, consultant, or employee at Microsoft, Intel, MCI, MIT, Oxford, and Harvard. He has worked in software engineering for a search engine start-up company, a Fortune 500 company, and a regional government. Sandvig's reseach about the future of the Internet and social media has appeared in/on The Economist, The New York Times, and National Public Radio and he has written for Wired. He has personally met Grumpy Cat.
Rae (Graduate Student Instructor)
Rae is a Ph.D. student in the Communication and Media department here at University of Michigan. She is broadly interested in the politics of storytelling in digital and online environments, and asks questions like--how do people use technology and media to tell stories about themselves? How are they circulated? How does technology impact their creation and distribution? And, especially, how do industries and institutions facilitate or repress the circulation of various stories? Whom do they empower? What social norms and expectations emerge about digital distribution as a result? She is also an insufferable nerd, and a native Michigander. She is always open to sharing cat pictures, video game recommendations, and hot takes about the college sports world with you.
Hailey (Graduate Student Instructor)
Hailey is a Ph.D. candidate in Communication Studies here at the University of Michigan. She is interested in the changing information infrastructures during public health crises, and how they influence people’s experience, understanding, and management of these events. Specifically, her dissertation explores how communication technologies shape the ways information flow among different actors--the state, citizens, and health workers--and shift the nature of their relationships. Prior to grad school, she worked as an assistant TV producer in CJ Entertainment and Media, which is located in Seoul, South Korea.
Cole (Peer Course Assistant)
My name is Cole and I’m a transfer junior majoring in Computer Science through LSA. I’ve learned a few different programming languages (particularly C, C++, Python, HTML, and CSS) from my time at Grand Valley State University and here at the University of Michigan, and I have some basic experience in creating websites and apps. A few of the programming classes I have taken are: Elementary Programming Concepts (EECS 183), Programming and Introductory Data Structures (EECS 280), Discrete Mathematics (EECS 203), and I’m currently enrolled in Data Structures and Algorithms (EECS 281). Some other fun things about me are that I speak Thai (poorly), I am a building supervisor at the IMSB, and I met Professor Sandvig through UROP last fall and I am still currently in a research project with him!
Johnny Cash (Dog)
Johnny Cash IV is a Standard Poodle and a certified therapy dog. Cash is a part of the University of Michigan's program to bring therapy dogs to campus for student and patient wellness. Cash is interested in digital video involving animals. His hobbies are the orange ball and the green ball. Cash can also be found on Instagram.
