CHOREOGRAPHS

architecture as event

* new dates *

24 August - 21 September 1996

at the zenobio institute - venice, italy

The workshop will investigate categorically new design media in architecture through the creative application of computer visualization methods. The focus of this application is the creation of four-dimensional design tools - CHOREOGRAPHS - that conflate the temporal aspects of architecture with its physical presence. The workshop introduces time as a fourth dimension in architecture by conceiving of architecture as events. A dictionary definition of "event" is a location determined by four co-ordinates; three of place and one of time. This space/time definition of event brings together two features of architecture; a building as an artifact and a building as a nexus of various time lines (production process, use, life cycle). It places the existence and production of architecture explicitly within a temporal continuum. The goal is to create new design tools, both born of and guiding computer technology, that allow architects to work seamlessly on a project as a four-dimensional totality. This time-conscious creation is analogous to, and in part derived from, the spontaneous structures achieved in jazz improvisation. The activities of CHOREOGRAPHS comprise field measurements of spatial and temporal data from test sites in Venice, experimental modeling of the data on computers, and the production of large-format drawings/models of the research. A show of the work in progress and public discussion will coincide with the Venice Architecture Biennale.

The workshop is open to students, graduates, practitioners and other individuals interested in new design media that address emerging temporal perceptions.
