Thermal Grooving: Isotropic Surface Tension

The video on the left (move mouse over to start motion) shows the evolution of thermal grooving with isotropic surface tension.  The initial condition is a flat surface with a grain boundary located vertical at the mid point of the surface.  Additionally the surface energy γs and grain boundary energy γb are equal. The grain boundary does not migrate, it only enters the problem by applying a force in the negative y-direction at the midpoint.  Note that the dihedral angle reaches a equilibrium value very quickly and then migrates down the grain boundary.

Healing Process of a Surface Groove

A groove will heal itself through interface migration with isotropic surface tension.  The only driving force is curvature.

Decay of Sine Wave on Surface

Here, I looked at a wave pattern on the surface.  I ran the same simulation; interface migration with isotropic surface tension
