There is some evidence that letter recognition itself is localized and, in particular, that its neural substrate is segregated from that of digit recognition. Our first line of research has sought to confirm the existence of such a "letter area" in extrastriate visual cortex and to investigate how it arises. We will first describe a neuroimaging study we did that did indeed find a letter area on or near the left fusiform gyrus in left inferior occipitotemporal cortex. We will then discuss a neural network model and behavioral study that provide evidence for one particular hypothesis for how such a letter area could arise through experience.
