Ames Senior Center Project

This undergraduate studio project, for an exceptionally flat site in Ames, Iowa, called for the design of a recreational and social center for elderly residents of the city.

Much of the design grew from the rigidly mandated program of room sizes and relationships. A centralized arrangement of octagonal forms was used to express the idea that the building was to be a "hub of activity" for the elderly.

This being an undergraduate design project, the instructor placed an emphasis on drawing. A part of this emphasis was the specification of a long list of drawings to be used in the presentation. The required drawings included a few (e.g. wall sections) not traditionally present in a set of presentation drawings, but creating the pencil renderings was an experience I found quite valuable.
