The Trip

The Trip

WHERE: Coulonge River, Quebec, Canada

WHEN: August 28 - September 2, 2004

HOW: Riviere Noire Expeditions (Michel Pouliot ( 819) 778-6347)

The Coulonge River has it's source in the Lakes of Parc La Verendrye and runs southward to the Ottawa River, dropping about 850 feet over that distance. 150 feet of that drop is over the Grandes Chutes du Coulonge near the town of Fort Coulonge near the Ottawa river. Heavy logging took place around the river beginning in the early 19th century, and continued as recently as the 1970's.

We were dropped off around Km 135, and paddled six days (five nights) to our take-out at the Coulonge Golf Club, above the Chutes. We had several portages around some of the hairiest rapids, and some great runs down Class I and II whitewater.
