Goals of the Project

This project attempts to compile geospatial information in a single, easy access resource to aid in 1. simple retrieval of archival and bibliographic information, 2. performing settlement analysis and spatial analysis at large scales, and 3. developing predictive models for archaeological survey.

1. The sites layer of this information system will serve as a repository for all pertinent information connected with archaeological sites in the project area dated between 1100 and 1400 AD. Types of information stored with this coverage will include, site number, site size, date of original recording, a list of all work previously done at the site, names of principle investigators who have worked at the site, bibliography of any documents regarding the site, and information on the current location of collections from the site whenever possible.

2. Coverages other than archaeological sites will include generalized surface geology, soils information (SSURGO), hypsography (elevation), landcover, and hydrology if possible. The spatial association of all these types of data will make several types of spatial analyses possible regarding archaeological sites. It will be possible to investigate patterns in land use at these sites based on soil type, available lithic resources, proximity to vegetation zones, proximity to major waterways, and proximity to eachother. This is an area that may shed light on the nature of the Steed-Kisker and Nebraska phase adaptations in terms of reliance on domestic agriculture versus wild resources, reliance on long-distance trade routes (i.e. rivers), and preferences in types of wild resource zones (e.g. grasslands and bison versus woodlands and deer).

3. While the lower Missouri River valley has been investigated in great detail, many sites remain to be located. Knowledge gained from spatial analyses as discussed above in point two may be used to develop predictive models based on tendencies in site location. Based on these, we will be able to target certain locations for archaeological survey and testing.
