Time of Injury Intro
School is very important to children. It is an important part of their social network. You may already have contacted the school to let them know your child has been injured and in the hospital. This initial contact may be the first of several that you will want to have to ensure your child's transition back to school.
Engage the school in the process of school reentry
Provide timely and accurate information about your child's situation. As the time of admission for a serious injury can be stressful, you might want to ask another family member or friend to help you make this contact. This information can include simple facts:
- My child was burned (To learn more about burn injury and treatment - click here)
- he is in the hospital in Ann Arbor
- He will be in the hospital for (anticipated period)
- I will keep you posted on his progress
Encourage your child's teacher to check out this website for information and resources they might find useful. We have included a section for school personnel for this purpose.
If your child is going to be in the hospital for more than a week, you will want to obtain assistance from the school to ensure your child keeps up with school work. You can obtain classroom assignments and bring them to the hospital for your child to work on as soon as they are physically ready. Click here for some suggestions on working with the school.
Consider Setting up various ways for your child to remain connected to the kids in their class
The hospital encourages families to consider Care Pages as one means of providing family and friends with information.
