Suggested Strategies for Working with the School

Identify a contact person with the school. This could be the principal, the teacher, the school counselor, school nurse or school social worker. Keep their name and phone number handy. Identify if your initial contact is the person you should contact for ongoing information sharing.

Ask your contact person about school services might be available to help you that you might need to know about over the course of your child's recovery.

Suggest how you want information to be shared. Identify if there is information you only want school personnel to have and not students.

Identify the person you need to speak with about homework assignments. If you plan to use the hospital school, remember to tell the school that someone from the hospital might be calling for that information. Clarify the consent procedures they would require.

If you have other children in the school, ask what assistance might be available to help them during this period of family stress.

Ask if there are procedures in place to assist with plans for homebound schooling if you anticipate needing that.

Ask if there are procedures in place to assist with school reentry when your child is ready to return.

Ask if there are procedures in place that might help your child link with his classroom.

Ask for any suggestions that they might have for ways to help you child while he is in the hospital or when he returns to home?
