What follows are "family stories" about the parents of Lewis Kellum.
There is no claim to their actual veracity. In some cases, they may be
the result of bad or misleading genealogical research by family members,
or just poor memories.
Lewis was born in Nov. 14 1803 in Northampton County, VA
His father was named James Kellum, and mother was either Margaret Dunton
or Dutton. One of Lewis' daughters was named Margaret Dutton Kellum, but
there was some confusion as to whether she was named after her grandmother,
or a good friend of Lewis' whose last name was Dutton. Margaret was
evidently one of two or three wives. Somewhere around 1810, the family
moved to Nansemond County, VA (south of Norfolk, VA) to the farm of William
Minton.
There is a letter returned undeliverable to a half brother Branden Kellum
that mentioned another brother named Jackson Kellam. These would have been
sons of James Kellum.
Another story, passed down orally, concerns the widow of James showing
up on Lewis' door step with a young child or children, and asking for support.
Lewis' wife at the time would not have them living in her house.

A leading contender for this 2nd wife is Rosy Costin who married a James Kellum in 1819
There is a family story about the widow of James Kellum showing up at Lewis' doorstep in Baltimore with a young child, and asking for help. Lewis' wife Nancy said she could not live in their house, and that she would have to be put up somewhere else. This would have to have been between 1830 and 1848.
William mentions in a letter to Lewis B. (1928) that Margaret Dutton was James'
