Read Periodicals

Characterization of category

This category is closely related to extending collections and seeing current information, but with some critical differences. Rather than seeking to provide static collections of data, periodicals seek to educate an audience through information which is constantly in flux. And unlike sites which provide up-to-the-minute information on a relatively narrow area--such as earthquakes--periodicals generally appeal to a particular audience with a variety of material designed to meet their interests.

Examples of this type

The Annals of Improbable Research (http://www.improb.com/)

Spoofs of traditional research, such as "Feline Reactions to Bearded Men". Can be a fun way to talk about experimental design.

Outside On-Line (http://outside.starwave.com/)

Some of the beautiful photography and interesting adventure stories of Outside magazine can be found at Outside Online.

Sky and Telescope On-Line (http://www.skypub.com/news/news.shtml)

An excellent on-line newsweekly. Up to the minute astronomical information, with great pictures.

Recommended activities

Periodicals can make great conversation starters. If you monitor a periodical for a few months, you'll get a feel for the kind of stories which are likely to appear. You might want to use a product such as WebWhacker to collect an ongoing series of a particular periodical for use as references.

It can also be interesting to see how different periodicals treat the same issue. USAToday may have a very different take on an astronomical phenomenon than Sky and Telescope.
