Research Interests

My research improves energy utilization by examining energetic resource availability and capacity while considering energy demands. This work attempts to identify optimal use of power systems within a regional location in order to be most efficient in terms of converting available energy to usable energy. A vehicle case study highlights how regional energy sources, demands and vehicle design can be developed in concert to improve energy efficiency. However using different objective functions, this general framework will be flexible enough to identify the cleanest methods of energy production (not necessarily the most efficient), and the most economical production methods for different timescales and different case studies (i.e. products other than vehicles).

I am also interested in understanding how aesthetic preference information can be gathered, understood, and applied in the design of artifacts. Marketers have quantified preference using a number of different techniques, but those techniques often neglect the physical realities that exist in product creation. Thus, when designers are asked to develop a product based on user wants supplied by marketing they often have to make compromises that lead to a design that is suboptimal in regards to both preference and functionality. However, if methods are developed that can coordinate the information available to marketers, designers and engineers then product optimality can be achieved with respect to a desired objective. My work has linked physics-based engineering models with preference models that have been systematically developed from behavioral science, as well as preference models derived using interactive evolutionary algorithms. Rigorously proven optimization techniques are then applied to explore the effects of these mathematical models on product design. I use this to explore the classical form versus functionality question and have found that designers can make informed design decisions even when a colocation of the most preferred design and best performing design does not exist.
