CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING: 1990

The Documents Center's Guide to the 1990 Census of Population and Housing, http://www.lib.umich.edu/govdocs/cenguide.html, describes the Census questions and geography.

An interactive version, http://www.lib.umich.edu/govdocs/cenindex, permits users to determine whether a question is 100% or sample and then identify a variety of paper, CD-ROM, internet, or magentic tape products which could contain the data.

A facsimile of the question is available from http://www.lib.umich.edu/govdocs/cicdoc/cen90app/question.htm.

There is a slide show describing the 1990 Census.

The definitions used for metropolitan areas in the 1990 Census were changed in 1993, so subsequent economic data has new definitions.

HISTORIC CENSUS DATA

7. Census Tract Data, Detroit and Ann Arbor

Census tract data and maps from the 1960-80 Censuses are on hold at the Documents Desk for your class. There are no CD-ROMS.

To compare tract numbering:

  • Look at maps of the earlier and latest Census to see if they physically compare.
  • Use the comparability tables in the paper reports to see if geographic areas compare despite renumbering between the Censuses.

8. Block Group Data, Detroit and Ann Arbor.

If a census tract split between 1980 and 1990
  • It is possible it split along block group lines
  • Ask the Documents staff for copies of the block maps for 1980 and 1990 to compare the areas
  • Block group data (for Michigan only) is available on microfiche in the Documents Center.

Block group data is only available on computer tape for earlier years.
