Information on Graduate Degree Programs in
Educational Foundations, Administration,
and Research Methods, with Policy Option

The Educational Studies Program at the University of Michigan is divided into several different administrative units. One of these carries the abbreviation of FAR/P, which stands for Foundations, Administration, Research, Policy. FAR/P includes the three specialzation areas of Educational Foundations, Educational Administration, and Research Methods. In each of these, students have an option to focus on Educational Policy. Hence the "P" that follows the "FAR."

The FAR/P master's degree program is a joint program, encompassing all four areas (the F, A, R, and P). Students admitted to this program select a concentration in either Educational Foundations, Educational Administration, or Research Methods in Education. They may, however, take courses in the other concentrations, as well as in Educational Policy. At least two courses in this degree program must be completed in an academic unit outside the School of Education. There is no summative examination for this degree, and a thesis is optional.

Students interested in a doctoral degree within this unit must apply to either Educational Foundations and Policy, Educational Administration and Policy, or Quantitative Research Methods. Different faculty members review applicants to the different concentrations (sometimes referred to as "subplans"). Students interested in a doctorate in any of the three subplans should be aware that they are heavily focused on research and scholarship. They do not attempt to provide the skills needed for practice as a school-based supervisor or administrator. However our faculty takes great pride in engaging in research that is on the cutting edge of educational proactice.

Interested applicants in Educational Foundations and Policy should be aware that this degree calls for extensive study in disciplinary areas outside the School of Education (typically in history, philosophy, sociology, economics, anthropology, or political science).

A sufficient number of master's level courses are offered at 4 PM and later to allow a student to attend part-time. However, two terms of full time study are strongly encouraged. Doctoral students are expected to be enrolled full time for their studies. Employment outside of research or teaching in the University setting is not permitted for students in the doctoral program.
