Research
Gary D Fenstermacher

My scholarly work centers on the study of teaching and teacher education, from the perspective of the philosopher and political theorist. I am especially interested in connections between knowledge and teaching, morality and teaching, and democracy and education. Perhaps the central question in my efforts to understand these connections is this one:

What would teaching and schooling look like if they reflected the most noble and worthwhile aspirations we have for the human species?

Seeking answers to this question has led me to three categories of inquiry: (1) Practical reasoning and argument in teaching, (2) Morality and manner in teaching, and (3) Democracy, schooling, and educational policy.

This Research section contains reports of research on The Manner Project (currently funded by the Spencer Foundation). It also contains selected writing done on the topics described above.
