1. Upcoming meetings will be:
Oct. 17 (in a different room), Nov. 21, Jan. 16, Feb. 20, Mar. 19, Apr. 16, May 21, Jun. 11
2. It was reported that Bill Stapp and Diana Dyer, each of whom has been closely associated with the nature center in the past, have been diagnosed with serious illnesses. We wish each of them well.
3. Dr. Bob Grese is now the master of science projects coordinator at the UM School of Natural Resources. Jim Breck is planning to make a presentation to the students to propose a project at the TNC. A possible project would be for an analysis and long-term plan for the TNC, hopefully with several options presented.
4. A suggestion was made to consider adding a pier in the future.
5. A discussion of using gravel on the trails as opposed to wood chips was discussed. On the
pro side:
-gravel might last longer than wood chips.
-wood chips could go over the gravel and might last longer.
On the con side:
-long-term commitment
-doesn’t preserve the "natural" look
The decision made was to test a small section on the berm. Tim Markel has a small amount of
gravel that he is willing to donate to the TNC.
6. Based on the great success of the special presentation on bats last year, it was suggested that the TNC arrange another presentation. This will be arranged for the winter.
7. The fall cleanup day will be Saturday,October 21, 1995. Work items suggested were:
-berm work
-wood chips/ gravel
-install bird houses which were donated by Wildbirds Unlimited.
-cleanup sidewalk area near Bluett-clear brush and add woodchips
-move the TNC sign which is near Yorktown forward since it is getting overgrown
-clear small growth from near amphitheater
8. A burn of the prairie should be planned for next spring.
9. It would be good to have another newsletter. Any volunteers?
10. Jim Breck will be TNC Committee chair; Tim Markel will be co-chair; Bill Ackerman will be secretary/treasurer.
