Thurston Nature Center Committee
March 19, 1996 Meeting Minutes, 7:00 PM

1. Upcoming meetings will be:
Apr. 16, May 21, Jun. 11

2. Regarding the Masters Projects in UM SNRE: Five students signed up to work on a management plan for the Thurston Nature Center -- Kim Ennett, Stephanie Gavinsky, Joe Howard, Elizabeth McKenney and Sally Moore. Most of the work will be done during the fall of 1996.

Part of the plan should include suggestions for the committee to work with the OHAC board on landscaping near the volleyball fence. There is a 60 ft by 3 ft area between the fence and the parking lot and about 100 ft of fenceline bordering the pond. For this year, OHAC has approximately $500 potentially available for landscaping. All landscaping does not necessarily need to be done this year. The choice of landscaping should include OHAC maintenance and cost considerations as well as the Nature Center desires. Bill Ackerman can coordinate between OHAC (Joanne Culbertson) and TNC.

3. Thanks to Mike Conboy for updating the brochure for TNC. It now lists the trees, birds and flowers of the TNC.

4. The Thurston Nature Center is on the Thurston School World Wide Web home page, http://www.nceet.snre.umich.edu/Thurston.html. Jim Breck is modifying the web page to include new information such as lists of trees, birds and flowers of the Thurston Nature Center.

5. Jim Harding of MSU is scheduled to speak about Michigan turtles/reptiles/amphibians on April 25 at 7:00 pm. Information went home with the Thurston calendar and was mentioned at the Clague PTSO meeting.

6. Jim Breck reported that Bob Grese (UM SNRE) agreed to organize a prairie burn this spring. We need to contact him about one month before the burn.

7. The spring work day is proposed for May 4, 1996. The Dyers have offered to host a potluck afterwards.

8. Beth Caldwell will be leading wildflower walks on April 20 and May 4 at 1:00 pm.

9. Diana Dyer will try to contact Beth Caldwell regarding the possibility of a flower walk.

10. The idea of providing a writing "contest" was discussed. The suggestion was made that this be billed as a writing "opportunity" rather than a "contest" since contests have too many losers.

11. The VanLeers will be setting up the purple martin house.

Respectfully submitted,

Bill Ackerman
