Words of Fire
Independent Journalists Who Challenge Dictators, Drug Lords and Other Enemies of a Free Press

by Anthony Collings

"Journalism shorn of alleged glamour is seriously hard and, too many times, deadly work. Collings documents this -- well."

-- Bernard Shaw,
former CNN Principal Anchor

This Web site provides information about my book Words of Fire, published in July 2001 by New York University Press. The book profiles courageous journalists around the world who defy censors and others seeking to repress journalistic free speech.

Among those profiled is J. Jesus Blancornelas, publisher of the Mexican newspaper Zeta, shown below (on left) being interviewed by me in March 1998 at his heavily guarded Tijuana home while recovering from gunshot wounds after an assassination attempt. Blancornelas had been targeted by a drug gang he exposed. During the attack his bodyguard was killed.

The introductory chapter of the book was published in The Chronicle of Higher Education on June 22, 2001.
