Method: Root canals in 40 extracted premolars were prepared up to F3 Protaper.
20 teeth with two canals anatomy and constant apical size and taper of the shaped canals were selected. They were randomly assigned for root canal filling with F3 gutta pearch cones using the Continuous Wave Vertical Compaction in one canal and Single Match Tapered Size Cone technique in other canal of the same tooth. Roots were scanned with micro-CT, and volume measurements for voids and gaps in the obturated roots were carried out by using specialized CT software. Percentage of gaps and voids was calculated.
Result: Both root fillings shows a comparable percentage of gutta-percha filled canal surface and it did not differ significantly between the two root filling groups.
Conclusion: Single-matched, taper-sized cone technique for cold obturation relies on the original canal shape and the ability to create a tapered circular preparation, a small diameter canal would be suitable for this technique with a comparable result to vertical compaction obturation technique.
