Henry Richard Cothran wanted in North Carolina.
The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, Tennessee, July 10, 1902. [15]

Henry Richard Cothran, a white man, is in the city calaboose awaiting the arrlval of a sheriff from Rutherfordton, N.C., who has a warrant for him charging him with the crime of murder committed In November 1901. He was brought in on the early morning train from Durant I. T. by United State Constable James Yarbrough, a deputy of United States Marshal A. N. Wilcox. Mr. Yarbrough had started to North Carolina with his prisoner and after his departure Mr. Wilcox received a report from North Carolina that the sheriff had started for him. He thereupon telegraphed to the police in Little Rock to intercept the men, and hold the prisoner here awaiting the arrival of the North Carolina officer. Police officers were at the Choctaw station when the train arrived, and brought the officer and his charge up town. The sheriff is expected tonight or tomorrow.

Mr. Yarbrough says that Cothran, when arrested admitted his identity, but declared that he did not know the name of the man whom he killed. He afterward acknowledged that his name was Harris, and that he met him in the road drunk, and was compelled to kill him. On May 12, 1902, Gov. B. Aycock offered a reward of $250 for the arrest and conviction of the fugitive. It appears that after the killing Cothran went to Hill County, Tex. and about two months ago removed to near Durant, I. T., and was working on the farm of Mr. Yarbrough's brother. He was passing under the alias of Carson, under which name he was receiving his mail. His wife and two children, one boy of 8, were with him, and Mr. Yarbrough, who had the description of Cothran in Gov. Aycock's proclamation, became suspicious of the man. His suspicions were crystalized into certainty when some of his household goods arrived from Texas consigned to Dick Cothran. His arrest followed.
