Notes for Henry Cockerham

These notes for Henry Cochran of Rutherford County are part of our research of collateral Cochran lines of Nancy Cochran [1], spouse of Isaiah Pickett (an ancestor of Robert Wolfe). We do not how, or if, Henry might be related to Nancy Cochran Pickett. These notes are included here to give access and to allow Ancestry.com to identify possible DNA matches with Robert. Several DNA matches have been found among descendants of daughter Isabella. These notes will be moved appropriately if we discover how Henry might be related.

Henry Cochran was, perhaps, related to William Cochran, who died in Georgia. Several people were named in Rutherford County documents, dated 1843, 1844, 1848, and 1850, regarding the estate of William Cockerham who died in Georgia. Both Murray county and Muscogee county in Georgia were named in the documents recorded in Rutherford county, North Carolina, so there may have been confusion about the place of death of William Cochran. We have found no Cochran probate listings in Muscogee County, Georgia for 1838-1875. [2] [3] We have found no Cochran probate listings in Murray County, Georgia for 1840-72. [4] Perhaps the estate was of William Cochran of Morgan County, Georgia who died about 1841. Both Philip Cockerham and William Cockerham may have had sons named Matthew, who lived in Morgan county at the same time. An 1884 estate, posted in Morgan County, Georgia, of one of the Matthews was to descend to his son Matthew Jr if Matthew Jr reached maturity. The estate was still unsettled 10 years later. [5] The Cockrum genealogy by James Edwin Cockrum [6] gives more detail about William, who died in Morgan County, Georgia, perhaps while visiting his son Matthew. A document in the Morgan County courthouse reportedly names Matthew as the administrator of his father's estate in North Carolina (not yet seen, we seek a copy of this document). William, who died in 1843 in Morgan County, reportedly had sons James and Hezekiah of Greenville, South Carolina. Other researchers have named William (deceased in Georgia) as a son of this Henry born about 1805. More details and links to these documents are given in the general chronology below this abbreviated list about the estate of William Cochran.

Research Notes:

Was Henry's wife named Mary Margaret (Polly) Richardson? That would explain the name of wife Mary in the 1850 census. Daughter Mary M married Scoggins. Perhaps she was named for mother Mary Margaret.

Several researchers link this Henry Cochran to Stephen George Cochran of Chester, Pennsylvania.
