Notes for Research Rutherford Cockerham

Research Notes:

The boundaries between several counties in North Carolina changed during this time period including Anson, Tryon, Mecklenburg, Lincoln, and Rutherford. In addition, the boundary between North and South Carolina was poorly defined. Relevant Cochran documentation might be found at any of these places.

1768 Tryon County (later to become Lincoln and Rutherford counties) was formed from the western part of Mecklenburg County in North Carolina. [1]

1779 Lincoln and Rutherford Counties were formed from Tryon County in 1779, which was formed from the western part of Mecklenburg County in 1768. [2]

The family of Robert Cochran [3], son of John Cochran and Rachel Lindsay, also lived in Rutherford County at this time; and their notes are with that family, not below. We have found no relationship of this family to the families that we are researching.

We suspect that several of the references about Cockerham/Cockrum families in Rutherford County, listed below, refer to children of Philip Cockerham [4], whose children have been named as: Minor Cockerham, Philip Cockerham, Charles Cockerham, Obadiah Cockerham, Henry Cockerham, Matthew Cockerham (who received land in Muscogee County, Georgia, see the 1844 Power of Attorney), Obedience Cockerham (spouse of Anthony Janel), Mary Cockerham, and Nanny (Nancy?)
