Many descendants of Roland Ware and wife Temperance have DNA matches with descendants of Nancy Cochran [1] and Isaiah Pickett [Research Notes, below]. We suspect that Temperance and Nancy Cochran were related. We seek further evidence to carify this potential relationship.
1760 Roland Ware, son of Peter Ware and Susanna Randle, may have been born about this time in Brunswick County, Virginia.
1772 Based on land deeds involving his parents, Roland's parents moved from Virginia to Anson/Montgomery County, North Carolina in about 1772.
1778 Roland Ware served in the Revolutionary War. He lived in Montgomery County, North Carolina when he was drafted, about 1778. [See Research Notes]
1782 Peter Ware (Invalid, 150 acres), Thomas Ware (2 enslaved persons: Dick, Suck), and Roland Ware (singleman) were on the Taxables list for Montgomery County, North Carolina. [2] Thomas Crocker, perhaps, was also listed. [3] [4] [5]
1783 Roland Ware was named on a payment list for the Revolutionary War on August 21 in Salisbury, [Mecklenburg County,?] North Carolina. [6] Note that Thomas Cochran [7] lived in Salisbury at the 1800 census.
1784-1787 Peter Ware and Roland [?] were listed in the census for Montgomery County, North Carolina.
1795 Rowland Ware purchased a negro boy named Syrius (age 18-19) and several household items from Elizabeth Allen. Montgomery County, North Carolina deed dated February 10. [8]
1800 Roland Ware lived in Montgomery County, North Carolina in a household with males: 2 (under 10), 1 (10 thru 15), and 2 (26 thru 44); and females: 1 (under 10), 2 (10 thru 15), and 1 (26 thru 44). [9]
1820 Roland Weir lived in Warren County, Tennessee in a household with males: 1 (10 thru 15), 1 (16 thru 18), 1 (16 thru 25), and 1 (45 and over); and females: 1 (under 10), 1 (10 thru 15), and 1 (45 and over). Ishaim Weir was listed adjacent. [10]
1830 Rolin Ware lived in Warren County, Tennessee in a household with males: 1 (20 thru 29) and 1 (70 thru 79); and females: 2 (under 5), 1 (20 thru 29), and 1 (60 thru 69). [11]
1830 Wildey [son Wiley?] Wier lived in Warren County, Tennessee in a household with males: 1 (under 5) and 1 (20 thru 29); and females: 2 (under 5) and 1 (20 thru 29).
1836 Roland Ware and son Isham Ware were taxed in Warren County, Tennessee. [12]
1840 Rolin Ware lived in Warren County, Tennessee in a household with males: 1 (10 thru 14) and 1 (80 thru 89); and females: 3 (under 5), 1 (5 thru 9), 1 (10 thru 14), 2 (20 thru 29), and 1 (60 thru 69). [13]
1844 Temperance Ware died on August 26, 1844 and was buried at Smyrna Cemetery (six miles southeast of McMinnville), Irving College, Warren County, Tennessee. [14] [15] The burial plot is near that of Isom Ware (1793-1855).
1849-1864 Roland Ware received a pension from the Knoxville, Tennessee office, for sevice in the Revolutionary War. [16] The pension may have been rejected, at one time. [17]
1850 Son Allen Ware (age 50, born in Tennessee) lived in Subdivision 23, McMinn County, Tennessee, in a household with Ruth Ware (age 50), Merrit Ware (age 30), Maxy Ware (age 15), Jasper Ware (age 12), Eliza Ware (age 10), John Ware (age 6), Susan Ware (age 4), and Rowland Ware (age 90, born in Tennessee). 1852 Wilie Ware and Letty Argo were married on September 30 in Warren County, Tennessee. [19]
1855 Son Isham Ware died on December 25, 1855 and was buried at Smyrna Cemetery, Irving College, Warren County, Tennessee. Isham Ware was born on July 18, 1793. [20]
1857 Roland Ware ws granted land in Tennessee for his service in the Revolutionary War. [21]
1860 Rowland Ware (age 101, born in North Carolina) lived in District 11, McMinn County, Tennessee, in a household with Allen Ware (age 57), Ruth Ware (age 57), John Ware (age 16), and Susan Ware (age 12). Rowland Ware was identified as "Soldier of 1776". [22]
1860 Son Wiley Ware (age 45, born in North Carolina) lived in Warren County, Tennessee, in a household with Letty Ware (age 46), Vesta Ware (age 7), Sarah Ware (age 3), and Cathrine Argo (age 15). [23]

Ware, Roland, age 103 years 2 months 2 days, died at Athens, Tn, on March 22; soldier of the American Revolution and drew a pension until the commencement of this war.
1864 A memorial stone has been placed for Roland Ware at South Liberty Cemetery, Riceville, McMinn County, Tennessee reporting his death in Spring, 1864 at age 103. [24] [25]

1870 Wilen Ware (age 65, born in North Carolina) lived in District 5, Warren County, Tennessee, in a household with Lettie Ware (age 56), Vesta Ware (age 17), and Sarah Ware (age 14). Wilen Ware's occupation was farmer. [27]
Roland Ware applied for a pension for his service in the Revolutionary War. Allen Ware was a claimant in 1882 for care that he had provided to Roland. There are several documents in his application file, including a summary letter from Winfield Scott. [28]:

In response to your letter of the 9th instant, I have the honor to advise you that from the papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim, S. 3434, it appears that Rowland Ware, pensioned Roland Ware, was born about January, 1750, place not stated.
While a resident of Montgomery County, North Carolina, he enlisted in 1773 and served at various times until the close of the Revolution, amounting to about twelve months in all, as private with the North Carolina Troops under Captain Randles, and Buckner Kimbrell, Colonel Harris and Childs; he was in a skirmish with the British and Tories on the east side of the Peedee River.
He was allowed pension on his application executed July 1, 1844, at which time he was a resident of Warren County, Tennessee.
In 1857 he was living in McMinn County, Tennessee, and he died June 15, 1864, at which time he was living about seven miles from Athen, McMinn County, Tennessee.
His wife, her name not stated, did not survive him.
A son, Allen Ware, was living in McMinn County, Tennessee, in 1882, aged eighty-two years, and his post office address was Riceville, McMinn County, Tennessee.
This is the only soldier by the name Rowland Ware found in the Revolutionary War records of this Bureau.

His Revolutionary War Service Record is: S3434/BLWT77006-160-55. Roland appears in the 1820 census for Warren County, Tennessee. In 1857 he was living in McMinn County, Tennessee. His son, Allen Ware, stated in an application for restoration of pension in order to receive Roland's back pay in 1882 that he died June 15, 1864. Roland's gravestone indicates that he died in the Spring of 1864 at age 103. However, that would have him as being born in 1761. The Nashville Dispatch reportedly listed his death date as March 22, 1863. This would make his age 103 years, 2 months and 21 days if he was born in 1760. Since March is considered to be Spring and June 21st the beginning of Summer, I would surmise that the March 22nd date is more accurate.
In July 1844, Roland attested to his age on his pension application sworn in Warren County as about 84 years old, so apparently even he wasn't absolutely sure what year he was born. If he was indeed born in 1760, he would have been 84 years old in July 1844. In McMinn County on or about December 15, 1857 he swears to his age as either 97 or 98 years. He would have been 98 on January 1st of the next month so he consistently believed that he was born in 1760. Since January 1st is New Years Day and he would have celebrated his birthday on this date, I believe it to be an accurate birth record. However, Allen Ware's testimony in 1882 as to his death on June 15, 1864 and the article in the Nashville Dispatch as it being on March 22, 1863, kinda makes his death date rather uncertain. (The original handwritten document actually looks like Allen said that he died on June 5, 1864.) Keep in mind that Allen's testimony was eighteen years later and that he was 82 at the time. The only documentation of deaths at that time was family documentation and if there wasn't a bible entry, then the date was passed down through oral history and that tends to get rather distorted from one person to the other. So lets suffice to say that he was either born in 1760 or 1761 and that he either died in March of 1863 or June of 1864.

I don't know the details of your desired DAR memebership, etc., but Roland/Roland Ware was a pensioned Revolutionary War veteran. In his file it states that Allen Ware was the son of Rowland, and that Allen lived in McMinn Co TN at Riceville about 7 miles from Athens.
During the American Revolution, there were three kinds of citizens in the colonies....Patriots who supported the Independence movement...Tories, or Loyalists to the King of England who saw the Patriots as traitors....and those who could care less either way. Roland WARE, the fifth great grandfather of Anthony Martini, on his mother's side, was an American Patriot.Born in Brunswick County, Virginia in 1760, Roland WARE was a teenager when the action started in 1775, and by that time he had moved across the colonial line to Northampton County, North Carolina. At age 19, Roland enlisted for three months as part of the militia used to augment the Continental Army, and began the first of two tours he would serve fighting the British troops and Tory Loyalists. The North Carolina militia soldiers were local citizens who were called out on an "as needed" basis, and these "Minutemen" were to defend the homeland when the Regular Army wasn't available. Under Major James Crump, Captain Buckner Kimbrell, and Lt. Harris, Roland WARE was a horse soldier, part of the Light Horse Cavalry that could travel quickly to any "hot spot" that developed.
In late July and early August, 1780, Capt. Kimbrell's Company of Cavalry traveled south from North Carolina to join General Griffith Rutherford on the Pee Dee River in South Carolina. From there, Roland WARE rode toward Camden, South Carolina and American Gen. Horatio Gates, where one of the most important battles of the American Revolution was about to take place. Roland's Cavalry company was ordered to stay at Cheraw Hill on the Pee Dee River in northeastern South Carolina to hold captured prisoners and wagons of ammunition, which they did by taking them across the river to a Mill. There they remained for several days, until August 16, 1780, when an express rider came from Camden and told them that General Gates had been soundly defeated and was in retreat, suffering about 2,000 casualties. Capt. Kimbrell ordered Roland and the others to stash some of the ammunition in the river, and hide the rest in an old house. Once done, the Cavalry crossed to the north side of the Pee Dee River, taking the prisoners along, and traveled north up the river to Haley's Ferry, Anson County, North Carolina.
After several days of receiving no orders, Capt. Kimbrell dismissed the militia unit, and Roland WARE and the others disbanded for a few days. Most went home, but not for long. A few days later, the Cavalry Company was reformed under Captain Harris, where until November, 1780, they protected the beef cattle used to feed the Continental Army in North Carolina.
Throughout the winter of 1780, the Tory Loyalists continued to harass, murder, and even torture Patriot homes in North Carolina. In at least one instance, Tory raiders used a burning wagon to set fire to a Patriot home with women and children inside. In the Fall of 1781, Roland WARE found himself back in the Cavalry under Major James Crump, this time assigned to protect the North Carolina Legislature from Loyalist actions. Though minor skirmishes kept Roland busy constantly, there were really no major battles between the Tory raiders and the militia....that is, until September 13, 1781. The day before, Tory soldiers under Colonel David Fanning had made a surprise raid on the State Capital in Hillsborough and captured the Governor of North Carolina and thirteen of his Council. Col. Fanning was enroute with his prisoner, Governor Burke, to Wilmington, where the British Army awaited their new captive.
The Patriot militia, with Major Crump leading Roland WARE's company, planned to cut off the Tory force before they could reach the British Army, and chose their ambush near Thomas Lindley's gristmill on Cane Creek in Alamance County. The Patriot's knew the Tory soldiers would probably use this well-known fording place, and positioned themselves on a hill nearby.
When the 300 militia men opened fire on the 600 Loyalist troops, it was a complete surprise to the Tories. Almost immediately, one of the Tory commanders was killed in their first charge up the hill. But, Fanning regrouped his forces and at the end of the battle, with over 100 casualties on each side, the Patriot militia was forced to withdraw. The Loyalists continued on with all of their prisoners to Wilmington, but Roland WARE had been in another adventure that he could tell for many years.
When Roland returned to Montgomery County at the war's end, he married Temperance WHITE, and they moved to Lincoln County, TN, then Warren County, TN, and finally settled near Athens, McMinn Co., Tennessee. Roland WARE drew his pension and lived until June, 1864, when he died at the age of 103.

On the first day of July 1844 personally appeared in open court before the Court of Warren County, now sitting, roll of the way her a resident of the County and State aforesaid, aged about eighty-four years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath, make the following Declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832.
That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated viz. Sometime in the year of 1778, he entered the service, in North Hampton North Carolina, being drafted for three months, then marched on to Halifax in the same State and was stationed there for some time -- and after that he volunteered in the Horse Company of Cavalry, then called the light horse company -- and marched under Captain Randles, Major Kimbal and Colonel Harris on to the Narrows on the Adkin River [sic, Yadkin River] Montgomery County North Carolina -- and he further states that that the 2nd tour in the horse Company, he went from Montgomery County in the same State to Drowning Creek some thirty miles, and was under the command of Colonel Childs, and he further declares that at this period he has forgotten many of the officers names under whom he served, but he recollects of doing service in the Horse Company during the revolutionary War from the time he volunteered in said Company until the end of the War in all twelve months, besides the first tour that he was drafted; during which time he had one skirmish with the British and Tories on the East of Pedee River under the command of Major Crump --

A history of McMinnville names Wylie Ware and Ezekeil McGregor as settlers in the fifth district bertween 1800-1810. [50]
DNA evidence: Several descendants of Roland Ware have DNA matches with descendants of Nancy Cochran and Isaiah Pickett and with other Cochran descendants who might be related to Nancy Cochran. Roland and Temperance Ware were adults living in North Carolina at the time that Nancy Cochran was born. Based on dates, Roland and Temperance Ware were plausibly an uncle and aunt of Nancy Cochran. DNA evidence suggests that Roland Ware and Nancy Cochran did not have a common ancestor, since Robert Wolfe has several DNA matches with descendants of other children of Peter Ware and Susannah Randle, but few of them match any Cochran descendants or other Ware descendants, so far. We suspect that Nancy and Temperance had a common ancestor. We show Temperance as an aunt of Nancy, until we learn the relationship between them, in order to simplify access to our notes about Temperance and Roland Ware.
