Notes for Benjamin Moore

1630 George Curtis, of Lillingstone Lovell Buckinghamshire, assigned the mortgage on a cottage in Syresham to John and Elizabeth Moore and their son Benjamin on October 2. The cottage was previously leased for a period of 2000 years to George Curtis of Bradwell, Buckinghamshire, weaver, by a William Overend of Syresham, husbandman. [1]

1670 The will of John Vickers of Syresham, dated March 6, left 10 pounds to "my well-beloved kinsman Benjamin Moore" and left 20 pounds to "John eldest son of Benjamin Moore". [2]

1674 The hearth tax role of Syresham assessed a Benjamin Moore to pay taxes on one hearth-dwelling (a small modest dwelling). [3]

16xx John Moore of Syresham (perhaps the son of Benjamin) acted as surety or bondsman for John Viccars of Boddington (about 12 miles from Syresham), who was the heir of Thomas Viccars of Boddington who died intestate. [4]

1668 Benjamin and his son Benjamin had perhaps become Quakers and were not listed in the register books of St. James the Lesser in Syresham Parish. Son John Moore apparently did not convert and his name was listed in the St. James parish records through the early 1700's. [5]

1679 Benjamin Moore assigned the mortgage on his cottage in Syresham to his son John for 20 pounds. Both father and son were described as carpenters in Syresham. The property included a cottage, appurtenances, barns, an orchard, a garden, and a backside. [6]

1682 Benjamin Moore (likely over age 60) might have sailed to New Jersey on the ship Amity with his son Benjamin and other members of the Haines and Borton families (Moore genealogy). Other researchers had indicated his son Benjamin immigrated on the Kent in 1677. I know of no documents to support either contention.

1683 11th month [January]. Return of survey by Daniel Leeds for Benjamin Moore of 100 acres on the south branch of Northampton River, by the Rancocas River. Nearby land was owned by John Haines and the Borton family. [7] Benjamin Moore may have settled on Bull's Head Road on the South side of the Rancocas below Lumberton.

1683 "11th m. (Jan.). Return of Survey for John Haynes, by Daniel Leeds, of 200 acres along the Southside of the South branch of Northampton River, adjoining Benjamin Moore." [8]

1684 John Moore, of Sirsham, Northampton Co., England [sold,] to Benjamin Moore, of Evesham Township, West New Jersey (husbandman), for 10 shillings and other divers considerations " 100 acres of land in West New Jersey, -which was surveyed and laid forth and by my father Benjamin Moore purchased of Samuel Jennings by deed dated April 20, 1684." [9] [10]

1697 Benjamin Moore Jr was named in a deed dated July 1, suggesting that Benjamin Moore Sr was still alive. Walter Humphries alias Powell, formerly of Painswick, Co. of Gloucester, England, broad weaver, now of Burlington County, yeoman, to Benjamin Moore junior, of said county, husbandman, and wife Sarah, for 200 acres in Burlington County, belonging to 1/16th of a share bought of William Peachee. [11]

1699 May 4. Return of survey for John Tahtam, of 2,000 a. on the Southside of the South branch of Rancocus, in two tracts: ... 2) along said South branch and Mason's Cr. between Benjamin Moore and Robert Engle. [12]

16xx Benjamin Moore died, as suggested by the land transfer of 1701 between two of his sons.

1701 John Moore, of Sirsham, Kingdom of England sold 100 acres in Evesham, New Jersey to Benjamin Moore of Evesham, for 10 shillings (a small amount) and indicated that the land is the same land that "my father Benjamin Moore in his Life Time purchased of Samuel Jennings in 1684." [undocumented]. On 2 Jan 1701. John Moore, of Northampton Co, England sold to Benjamin Moore, husbandman, of Everham, Burlington County, West New Jersey, for £0.5, 100 acres. Signed John (X) Moore. Wit: Thomas Myer & Thomes (X) Johnson [13].
