Research Notes:

These notes are for Bernard Wolf of Lancaster Borough, saddler, spouse of Anna Charlotte Bier. We are following Bernard Wolf of Earl Twp, son of George Michael Wolf [1]. They were two different people, although the families share many first names and lived in Lancaster County during the same time period. Bernard Wolf, son of George Michael Wolf was a minor over age 14 when guardians were appointed for the children of George Michael in 1756, suggesting that he was born between 1735 and 1742. Bernard Wolf of Earl Twp named Ursula as his wife in a deed dated 1785. Bernard Wolf of Lancaster Borough died at age 60 in 1792 suggesting that he was born in 1732. Bernard Wolf of Lancaster Borough was married to Anna Catharine and had children born as early as 1756. Tax lists for Earl Twp and Lancaster Borough list Bernard simultaneously in both places in overlapping years. Many details of the life and descendants of Bernard Wolf of Lancaster Borough have been documented. [2]

1755 "Bernard Wollf and Charlotte Bieri" were married on October 2 at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [4]

1756 Anna Charlotte Wolf, daughter of Bernard and Anna Charlotte Wolf, was born on July 7. She was baptized on July 18 with sponsor Anna Martha Walter at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [5]

1758 An unnamed daughter of Bernard and Anna Charlotte Wolf, was born on August 27. She was baptized in September 1758 with sponsor Peter Bier at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [6]

1759 The tax list for Lancaster Borough, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania named Barnt Woolf, sadler, on land of John Frick. [7] [8] [9]

1761 James Hamilton, of Philadelphia, granted lot #387 on Muberry Street in the Borough of Lancaster to Bernard Wolf. The deed was dated on May 1. [10]

1761 Anna Christine Wolf, daughter of Bernard and Anna Charlotte Wolf, was born on January 9. She was baptized on January 18 with sponsors Christian Buch and Susanna Margaret at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [11]

1762 Christian Wolf, son of Bernard and Charlotte Wolf, was born on December 6. He was baptized on December 19 with sponsors Christian Buch and Susanna Margaret at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [12]

1765 Bernard Wolf, sadler, purchased lots 39 and 40 from Isaac Whitelock, both of Lancaster Borough. [14] See also [15]

1765 Eva Catherine Wolf, daughter of Bernard and Anna Charlotte Wolf, was born on February 2. She was baptized on April 7 with sponsors Philip Bier and Eva Catharine at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [16]

1766 Elizabeth, daughter of Bernard and Charlotte Wolf, was born on December 11, 1766. She was baptized on January 11 with sponsors Peter Bier Jr and Elizabeth at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [17]

1766 A survey was made for Jacob Wolf and Barnard Wolf and George Rein, dated August 22, for land in Earl Twp, Lancaster County that had been warranted by George Michael Wolf on March 21, 1738/39. George Michael Wolf, the warrantee, had died intestate and eldest son George Michael Wolf had granted the land to his brothers Joseph, Jacob, and Bernard. Joseph had sold his share to George Rein. 1769 John George Wolf, son of Bernard and Charlotte Wolf, was born on February 12. He was baptized on March 8 with sponsors Peter Bier Sr and Susanna Barbara at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [20] [21]

1770 Anna Maria Wolf, daughter of Bernard and Charlotte Wolf, was born on November 15. She was baptized on November 18 with sponsors Peter Wolf and Anna Maria at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [22] [23]

1770 The tax list for Lancaster Borough, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania named Barned Wolf with 10 acres and William Wolf. [24] [25]

1771 The tax list for Lancaster Borough, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania named Barnard Wolf. [26]

1772 The tax list for Lancaster Borough, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania named Bernad Wolf, sadler. [27] [28]

1773 Anna Maria Wolf, daughter of Bernard and Ann Charlotte Wolf, was born on February 1. She was baptized on February 26 with sponsors Eberhard Michael and Anna Maria at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [29] [30]

1773 The tax list for Lancaster Borough, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania named Barnet Woolf, sadler. [31]

1774 Jacob Wolf and wife Christina of Earl Twp sold land to Bernard Wolf. Jacob had received a patent for the land on May 7, 1767[Patent AA8-278]. The land was adjacent to lands of several people, including Bernard Wolf. [32]

1781 Bernard Wolf and wife were sponsors at the baptism of Anna Charlotte, daughter of Jacob Mueller and wife on November 25, 1781. Anna Charlotte was born on November 7, 1781. [39]

1781 Bernard Wolf was taxed in Lancaster Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [40]

1782-83 Bernard Wolf was taxed in Lancaster Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [41]

1783 Elizabeth, da. of Bernard Wolf died on February 9, at age 16y 1m 27d, and was buried at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [42]

1785 Bernhard and wife Ursula Wolff, of Earl Twp, sold land to George Martin. Bernard had purchased the two tracts from Jacob Wolf in 1774. [43]

1785 Bernard Wolf was taxed in Lancaster Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [44]

1792 Bernard Wolf died on August 22, 1792, at age 60y 7m 20d, and was buried at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [45]

1789 Bernard Wolff, farmer, was taxed in Lancaster Borough, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [50]

1790 Bernard and Tobias Wolf were taxed in Lancaster Borough, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [51]

1791 Bernhard and Tobias Wolf were taxed in Lancaster Borough, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [52]

1792 Bernard (sattler) and Tobias (shrin?) Wolff were taxed in Lancaster Borough, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [53]

1792 Bernard Wolf died at age 60y 7m 20d on August 22 in Lancaster County. [54]

1793 Land from the estate of Bernard Wolf was evaluated by the Lancaster County Orphans Court on June 24. Payments were to be made to the heirs, named as eldest son Christian, Susanna the wife of Jacob Miller, Charlotte the wife of Christian Slagle, Catharine the wife of Philip Gloninger, George Wolf, Mary the wife of George Diefenderfer, and Jacob Wolf, after the death of the widow Charlotte Dehuff, who was remarried. 1793 Christian Wolf, eldest son of Bernard, purchased land from the other heirs of Bernard Wolf, of Lancaster Borough. The estate included a tenement on King Street and 5 lots in the Borough of Lancaster. The Orphans Court had found that the estate should not be divided. The other five heirs were Jacob Miller of Baltimore Town in the state of Maryland Tanner and Susanna his wife, Christian Slagle of Baltimore Town aforesaid tanner and Charlotte his wife, Philip Gloninger of the Borough of Lancaster in the County of Lancaster and state of Pennsylvania Yeoman and Catharine his wife, George Wolf of Chambersburg in the County of Franklin and state of Pennsylvania aforesaid sadler and George Diefederfer of the Borough of Lancaster in the County of Lancaster aforesaid Baker (the said Susanna the wife of Jacob Miller, Charlotte the wife of Christian Slagle, Catharine the wife of Philip Gloninger, and George Wolf being four of the children of Bernard Wolf late of the Borough of Lancaster … sadler deceased and the said George Diefenderfer being the husband of Mary a Minor daughter of the said Bernard Wolf deceased and guardian duly chosen and appointed … over the estate of the said Mary and the said Philip Gloninger being also guardian duly chosen … over the estate of Jacob Wolf a Minor son of the said Bernard Wolf. Bernard Wolf left a widow Charlotte, since intermarried to Abraham Dehuff and seven children to wit Christian Wolf his eldest son [and the other 5 heirs]. The seven page deed described in detail the location and disposition of the tracts of land. Deed dated July 20, 1793. [58] See also [59]

1797 Bernard (sattler) and Tobias (shrin?) Wolff were taxed in Lancaster Borough, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [60]

1805 Phillip Diefenderfer and George Eckert, executors for the estate of Jacob Ludwig, deceased, sold land to Christian Wolff, all of Lancaster Borough. The will of Jacob Ludwig was dated June 11, 1801. Deed dated April 16. Witnessed by Philip Gloninger. [61]

1808 Christian Wolf and wife Mary/Maria, of Cocalico Twp, Lancaster County, sold a lot on Orange Street, Lancaster Borough, to Doctor Albert DeFresne. The lot was previously owned by Jacob Ludwig and was sold by the executors of Jacob Ludwig to Christian Wolf. Deed dated April 1. Witnessed by Philip Gloninger. [62]

Research Notes:

Bernard Wolf [63] of Earl Twp, son of George Michael Wolf and spouse of Ursula, lived nearby during an overlapping period of time, but was a different person.

A biosketch reports [64] [65]:

Barnardt Wolff, (1732-92), carried the mail from Lancaster to Philadelphia. He purchased horses for the artillery and cavalry; was paid in government scrip, which was never redeemed. In 1777 he assisted in guarding the Hessian prisoners captured at Trenton and Princeton. He was born in Germany; . died in Lancaster, Pa., where he and his wife are buried.
