Notes for Henry Nicodemus

1767 Maria Magdalena Nicodemus, child of Henry Nicodemus and Anna Maria Nicodemus, was baptized on April 5, 1767, at Reihers Church (now Zion's, Brickerville), with sponsor Maria Magdalena, wife of Frederick Steindorfer from Lebanon. Maria Magdalena Nicodemus was born on March 19, 1767, in Pennsylvania. [1]

1768 Anna Maria Nicodemus, daughter of Heinrich and Anna Maria Nicodemus, was born on September 9. She was christened on September 25, 1784 at Brickerville, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [2] The sponsor at her baptism was Maria Elizabeth, wife of Samuel Reihers. [3]

1774 Henry Nicodemus, late of Lebanon Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and now of Frederick County, Maryland, sold land to William Bush. The tract was on Water Street and Cumberland Street in the town of Lebanon. Dated November 12. [4]

1801 Henry Nichodomus, of Frederick County, Maryland, dated his will on June 24. The will made bequests to wife Mary and children John Nicodemus, Cathrine Croft, Jacob Nicodemus, Magdalena Liestor, Mary Nicodemus, Philip Nicodemus, Esther Hanis?, Sophia Nicodemus, Elisabeth Gisondorfer, Rachel Nicodemus, and Susanna Nicodemus. Peter Sheriner? and Jacob Flickinger were named executors. James, John, and Andrew Poulson were witnesses. The will was affirmed on October 13, 1801 by the witnesses. [5]

1801 Henry Nicodemus died on September 7 and was buried at Nicodemus Family Cemetery, New Windsor, Carroll County, Maryland. Henry Nicodemus was reported born on September 7, 1728. [6]

1814 Ann Mary Nicodemus, wife of Henry Nicodemus, died on November 20 and was buried at Nicodemus Family Cemetery, New Windsor, Carroll County, Maryland. Ann Mary Baile Nicodemus was born in 1737. [7]

Henry Nicodemus, the founder of the American branch of the family, and the great-greatgrandfather of Augustus W. Nicodemus, Jr., was one of four brothers who came from Germany to America, and settled first in Philadelphia, Pa. … Henry, the fourth brother, removed from Philadelphia, Pa., to Carroll County, Md., then an uninhabited wilderness. Many years prior to the Revolution he took up the land which is still in the possession of the family. During the war with England, he owned and operated a small distillery, and also built a mill which he carried on for some time. He died in Carroll County, aged sixty, and is buried on the homestead, where his grave is marked by a stone erected by one whose name is unknown. He had a sister, Mrs. Baile, whose son was named Nicodemus. … John L. Nicodemus, son of Henry Nicodemus and great-grandfather of Augustus W. Nicodemus, Jr., was born on the same homestead in Carroll County. … John L. Nicodemus was married to Ann March Neff. Little is known of his wife's family, except that they were of Swiss descent.

1784 John Nickedemus and Ann Neff were married on December 24 at Frederick County, Maryland. [10]
