Notes for Philip Cockerham

1769 Philip Cockham, of Lunenburg County, Virginia, purchased land from Robert Willis of Mecklenburg County. The 251 acre tract was on Boffelo Creek in Mecklenburg County, previously granted by patent to Stephan Willis and Lewis Dupree, now deeded to Robert Willis and John Stone, bounded by Seats corner, and Pointers. Deed dated April 10. [1] Perhaps this was Philip Jr., since the tract was near lands that he purchased later.

1773 Minor Cockerham sold land to Philip Cockerham Junior. The 200 acre tract was on Buffelo waters in Mecklenburg County, Virginia on the Cockerham line, John Stoners line, George Newtons line, and Hawkins order. Deed dated February 6. [2] Perhaps Philip Jr was at least age 21.

1773 Minor Cockerham and Philip Cockerham Junior sold land to Martin Tureman, all of Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The 400 acre tract was on the waters of Great Bufflelow Creek bounded by M'r Cockerhams line, Hawkins order, George Newtons line, Wilkins's line, and John Stone line. Deed dated June 12. Susannah, wife of Philip Cockerham was aware of the sale. [3]

1774 Philip Cockerham purchased land from Martin Tureman. The 400 acre tract was on the waters of Great Bufflelow Creek bounded by Phillip Cockerham's line, John Stones line, John Potters line, George Newtons line, and James Wilkins line. Deed dated February 8. Witnessed by Samuel Vaughan, Thomas Earle, and Prudence Vaughan. [4]

1774-1796 Philip Cockerham moved from Mecklenburg County, Virginia to Rutherford County, based on deed records.

1796 John McKinny obtained an attachment against Philip Cockerham for the sum of 5 pounds. Sheriff James Boyle made return of the same levied against 100 acres of land of Philip Cockerhans Anthony Junior lives on and the court ordered that the same be sold. July court. [5]

1799 Philip Cockerham sold land to Anthony Junel (spouse of sister Obedience) on October 28, (recorded June 14, 1801). The land was in Rutherford County, North Carolina, on a branch of white oak [creek] joining his [Philip Cockerham] other entry including minor? cochrams improvement ... The tract contained 50 acres bearing patent date July 30, 1779. Witnessed by Joshua Linsey, Dysy Cockerham, and Carlton Linsey. [6]

1800 Carlton Lindsey proved a deed from Philip Cockrum to Anthony Junil containing fifty acres bearing date 28th day of Oct. 1799. April, Rutherford County Court records. [see deed dated 1799] [7]

A biosketch reports [8]:

Philip Cockerham Jr. b.Va. before l750; wife same age. In Barren Co., Ky. l8l0. Had been in Edgefield Co., S.C.in l790, and possibly as early as 1776. 2 sons, l dau. b. l784-94; 1 son b. l794—l800. No known war service.
