The son of John Sterner & Mary (Eichelberger) Wolf, in 1860 he lived with and/or worked for dry goods merchant Benjamin Plank in Dickinson Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted - overstating his age by five years - in Cumberland County October 13, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg that same day as a private with Co. F, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pa). From July 20, 1863, through October 31, 1864, he was detached to the brigade as a teamster, On June 17, 1865, as part of a war-end consolidation, he transferred to Co. F, 2nd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry, and honorably discharged with his company August 7, 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky. According to his widow, he was shot in the hip in battle and the ball never removed, but his compiled military service records make no mention of this.
He married Anna lnu. and fathered C. H. (b. 10/12/76 or 10/25/72) and Teresa (b. 08/10/80 or 08/19/77 - married Harry Z. Kegeris) - John reported both sets of birth dates for his children. Anna died November 19, 1897, and he married widow Julia A. Egolf, née Gross, October 14, 1904, in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, but he deserted her (he claimed he left for employment) in January 16, 1906. Julia filed for half his pension, and he returned to live with her the following December. Cause of his death is listed as "heart disease." In his pension, he reported his date of birth as April 12, 1839.
