Notes for James Cochran Pickett

Research Notes:

We suspect that most of the notes below for James Pickett relate to James C Pickett, father of Reuben and Leander L. Pickett and other children. However, it is plausible that several of them relate to different people with similar names. We have found no documents naming the parents of this James C. Pickett, with the children shown here. However, DNA match results suggest that this James C. Pickett, with these children, was a descendant of Micajah Pickett or Isaiah Hinson Pickett. There are also some possible Cochran DNA shared matches among descendants of this James C. Pickett (which would suggest descent from Isaiah Hinson Pickett and Nancy Cochran). Perhaps this is James C Pickett named in the 1843 deeds of Isaiah's brother, Jeptha Pickett. A letter between brothers James and Micajah Pickett, sons of Isaiah Pickett, clarifies that James M Pickett of Hamilton County, Texas, was a son of Isaiah Pickett. Although Isaiah also had a son named James Madison Pickett, we have assigned this James C Pickett as a son of Isaiah Pickett, for lack of a better assignment. Unexplained notes for James [B/M] Pickett, of Louisiana, are also included in the Research Notes, below.

A sketch of son Reuben Jeptha Pickett reports the following, likely based upon first-person information provided by Reuben Jeptha Pickett [27]:

Reuben J. Pickett, merchant of Cooper, Texas, was born January 23, 1845, and is a son of James C. and Martha Van (House) Pickett. James C. was a native of North Carolina, moved to Georgia in early life, and there Reuben J. was born. James C. was of a restless, speculative disposition, made and lost several fortunes and resided in no less than seven states. In 1868 he came to Texas, settling in what was then Lamar, now Delta county, and materially assisted in the organization and development of the latter. He was a member of the Methodist church, noted for his charities, and was an influential man in State and county affairs until his death in 1882. The brothers and sisters of Reuben J. were nine in number, only three of whom are living, namely - Mary E., Eliza A. and Leander L. (who is a noted evangelist of the Methodist Episcopal church South).
